The Republic of Korea’s SHIN Jeahwan claimed the men’s vault Olympic title after winning a tie-break against ROC’s Denis Abliazin. Armenia’s Artur Davtyan took the bronze.
Shin and Abliazin posted matching average scores of 14.783. The tie was broken by the gymnast with the highest score of the two vaults before the average for the final score, giving the gold to Shin. Davtyan, who earned an average of 14.733, was also the winner of a tie-break with the Philippines’ Carlos Yulo.
The Korean’s opening vault was a Kasamatsu two-and-a-half, and he performed a front handspring Randi for his second run. Shin’s victory comes nine years after YANG Hak-seon won their nation’s first gold in gymnastics.
Davtyan’s medal was historic as well, as he became the first gymnast from his country to win a medal in the sport. _____________________________________________________
