Ten-man Everton began the 2024/25 Premier League campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at Goodison Park after a number of key moments went against the Blues at both ends of the field.

An offside flag denied Jack Harrison an opening goal inside the first five minutes before Kaoru Mitoma broke the deadlock on 25 minutes, applying a simple finish to Yankuba Minteh’s inviting low cross from the right side of the penalty area.

The Blues continued to look dangerous, though, and thought they had a penalty within two minutes of the half-time restart when Dominic Calvert-Lewin – on his 200th career appearance – was felled by Lewis Dunk, only for referee Simon Hooper to be sent to a pitchside monitor and reverse his decision.

Everton’s frustrations were compounded minutes later when the visitors seized on a loose pass and Danny Welbeck doubled the deficit with a low finish.

The Toffees were then forced to play the final 25 minutes with a one-man disadvantage after Ashley Young was dismissed for a professional foul, before substitute Simon Adingra added a third in the dying minutes.
