Johnny Weissmuller was a US-American swimmer and five-time Olympic champion who later became a movie star. However, it was not Weissmuller who became Tarzan, but he played the role of Tarzan in several movies. Weissmuller was born on June 2, 1904, in Timisoara, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He emigrated with his family to the United States when he was a child and later became a competitive swimmer.
Weissmuller’s swimming career began at age 17, and he quickly established himself as one of the best swimmers in the world. He won five Olympic gold medals and set 67 world records during his career. After retiring from swimming, Weissmuller pursued a career in acting, where he became famous for his portrayal of Tarzan. He starred in 12 Tarzan films between 1932 and 1948 and was widely regarded as the definitive screen Tarzan.
