The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. The event included nine sports: athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling. There were a total of 43 events, including track and field, discus throw, pole vault, and marathon. The marathon race was inspired by the ancient Greek story of Pheidippides, who ran from the city of Marathon to Athens to deliver news of a military victory.
The first modern Olympic Games were a huge success, with athletes from 14 countries participating in the event. The games were intended to promote international peace and friendship through sports, and they continue to serve that purpose today. The Olympic Games have since grown to become the world’s largest international sporting event, with athletes from over 200 countries competing in a variety of sports.
