Canada’s Andre de Grasse of Markham, Ont. won gold on Wednesday at the Tokyo Olympics in the Men’s 200-metre final, setting a Canadian record with his time of 19.62, breaking the time he had set just a day before in the semifinal. He also becomes the first Canadian athlete to win the race in 93 years.
The medal is de Grasse’s second, after winning bronze earlier in the 100m final. Canadian Aaron Brown also competed in the same race, coming in sixth. It was the first time Canada has had two men in the event since 1928. The race was just one of several events taking place Wednesday, with decathlete Damian Warner also competing in several events, including coming in third in his 400-metre heat.
There are also efforts underway ahead of Friday’s gold medal game for women’s soccer, with Canada backing Sweden’s request to change the time to give both teams a break from the intense heat that has loomed over several Tokyo events this past week. Crystal Goomansingh has more on Canada’s latest results at the Olympic Games.
