In July 2021, Brisbane 2032 became the first host elected under the new approach to electing Olympic hosts.
Key partners behind the project discuss why Brisbane, Queensland and Australia wanted to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and look back on how the International Olympic Committee’s new approach to electing hosts enabled them to create a climate-responsible project with lasting community benefits.
Annastacia Palaszczuk, Queensland Premier and Minster for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, describes how the Games will bring socio-economic benefits worth AUD 8.1 billion for the state and AUD 17.5 billion for Australia, with a Queensland-first procurement policy to ensure regional businesses are part of the supply chain.
Adrian Schrinner, Lord Mayor of Brisbane, talks about how the Games will help the city to become a more active and healthy community, and how the IOC’s new approach to hosting enables mid-sized cities across the world to aspire to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Natalie Cook, Olympic champion in beach volleyball, explains how Brisbane 2032 is working with athletes from all over the world to inspire bold ambitions for future sport in Australia and beyond.
Patrick Johnson, Oceanian men’s 100m record-holder since 2003, explains how the Olympic project was the first of its kind to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, to ensure that their culture is acknowledged, celebrated and showcased to the rest of the world.
Jock O’Callaghan, President of Paralympics Australia, details how Brisbane 2032 will open up permanent access to sporting facilities to half a million people with a disability even before the Games begin.
This film contains highlights from a series of IOC films about the election of Brisbane 2032.
The Olympic host selection process has been reformed in recent years, to reduce the cost of hosting and to make Games organisation more sustainable. For example, all Olympic hosts must use a maximum of existing and temporary venues and build new ones only if there is a long-term legacy need.
Every aspiring Olympic host is invited to partner with the IOC to help build its own unique vision for the Games and a sustainable masterplan that fits with existing regional and national development plans, in addition to the long-term strategic goals of the Olympic Movement.
