Jose Mourinho said Japan’s stunning 2-1 victory over Germany in their World Cup opener was not “a crazy surprise” because he believes the current crop of European players are focused too much on the individual and not the team.
Mourinho has never had a Japanese player under his charge, but he coached South Korea captain Son Heung-min while at the helm of Tottenham Hotspur and says Asian players have a team mentality that differs from today’s European stars who have “a big focus on egos”.
Mourinho is in Japan this week with his AS Roma squad for the Euro-Japan Cup, a pair of friendlies with J.League sides Nagoya Grampus and the newly-crowned champion Yokohama F Marinos.
Asked in Tokyo on Thursday if he had any interest in taking over Japan with Hajime Moriyasu set to step down after the World Cup. Mourinho said the Blue Samurai do not need a foreign head coach, but added “you can never say never”.
