In the 1998 summer Koshien final, he became the second player in history to achieve a no-hitter, drawing attention as the “monster of the Heisei period.” He joined the Seibu Lions in 1st place in the 1998 draft. He won the most wins from his rookie year and received the Sawamura Award. Won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics. He was the MVP of the World Baseball Classic in 2006 and 2009. In 2006, he signed with the Boston Red Sox and became the first Japanese pitcher to win the World Series.
