PM Modi, Sachin Tendulkar lead wishes as Mirabai Chanu clinches India’s first gold medal at CWG 2022

Mirabai Chanu became the first Indian gold medalist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games after dominating her contest. Chanu won the gold medal at the Quadrennial event for the second edition in a row. The Tokyo Olympics Silver Medalist had also won the Gold in the 2018 edition at Gold Coast

Mirabai Chanu enriched his legendary legacy in Indian weightlifting even more by clinching the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham. With her incredible victory on the second day of the competition, Chanu has become only the first Indian gold medalist in the ongoing edition.

Chanu is the third Indian weightlifter to win a medal on Saturday (July 30). Earlier in the day, Sanket Sargar and Gururaj Poojary had won the silver and bronze medals in the Men’s 55 and 61 KG category respectively. Poojary had won the silver medal at the 2018 CWG too.

Talking about Mirabai, she defended her title having won the gold at the previous edition in Gold Coast. The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist had also won the silver medal in the 2014 CWG in Glasgow.

Following Mirabai’s historic triumph, reactions have flown fast with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur lavishing praise on the star Indian weightlifter.

“The exceptional @mirabai_chanu makes India proud once again! Every Indian is delighted that she’s won a Gold and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham Games. Her success inspires several Indians, especially budding athletes,” wrote PM Modi.

“Much awaited Gold by @mirabai_chanu creating a new Games Record in Women’s 49kg Snatch, Clean and Jerk and total lift. You have put India on the top yet again with your amazing performance in CWG 2022,” wrote Thakur on Twitter.

On the way to her second CWG gold medal, Mirabai set a new games record in the women’s 49 KG category by lifting a total of 201 KG. She lifted 88 KGs in the snatch and followed it up with a sensational lift of 113 KGs. Quite incredibly, Mirabai beat silver medalist Roilya Ranaivosoa of Mauritius by a massive margin of 29 KGs.
