Amit Panghal will be aiming for a change in the colour of his medal from the previous edition. The pugilist won silver in the 49-kg category at the 2018 Gold Coast games.
Like the 2018 edition, boxer Amit Panghal will once again look to secure a medal for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The 26-year-old will be competing in the 51-kg category this time. Amit, who overcame a doping issue early in his career, made a mark by winning bronze at the 2017 Asian championships Medals at Commonwealth Games (silver), and Asian Games (gold) in 2018 , Asian championships (gold) and the World championships (silver) in 2019 elevated Amit’s status. He was the first Indian male to achieve a World Boxing Championship silver. His early exit at the Olympics disappointed Amit, who looks to redeem some pride at the Commonwealth Games. The then world number 1 Amit Panghal was knocked out in the pre-quarters at the olympics. His poor show at the Olympics wasn’t well received by the Boxing Federation of India(BFI) back then. In fact, BFI Chief Ajay Singh had even stated that they didn’t see him as their star player after his poor show. Panghal will definitely have a point to prove when he enters the ring in Birmingham. Thus, this makes him an ideal medal prospect at this years commonwealth games. Panghal seems to be in a good frame of mind ahead of the quadrennial event. He won Silver at Thailand Open at the start of the year. He also booked his place at CWG 2022 having secured a top spot at the trials. All of India will be rooting for him to bring home the ultimate glory when the action unfolds in a few days’ time.
