OLYMPICS MEDIA RIGHTS
The Olympic games are finally here, and here on Newsbreak we’d love to show you all the action. But we can’t. There are really strict rules about what we’re allowed to broadcast. See, the International Olympic Committee is really strict on who can and can’t use footage of the Olympics. Media companies around the world pay a lot money to the IOC to get exclusive broadcast rights, and here in Australia, those rights belong to Channel 7. Back in 2014, they made a deal with the IOC to get the rights for the 2016 games in Rio the 2018 winter games in PyeongChang and Tokyo 2020 which cost them around $200 million! It’s a lot of money, but big events are an opportunity for broadcasters to make a lot more than that thanks to, well, ads basically. But for channels like the ABC, funded by taxpayers, well it can’t afford to spend the hundreds of millions it takes to get those rights. What does that mean? Well, the news is allowed to report on the games but it’s only allowed to show a little bit of vision, just a few minutes a day, and here on Newsbreak, we don’t get any of that time, so Instead, you’ll get to look at these instead. Photos. But, while there’s tight restrictions for us, we’ll keep doing our best to bring you the best coverage we can.
GREAT BARRIER REEF UPDATE
The Great Barrier Reef won’t be going on the list of World Heritage sites that are “in danger”. Not yet, anyway. Last month, the UN’s cultural heritage organisation UNESCO recommended it be classified as in danger, mostly because of the impacts of climate change. But the Australian federal government campaigned hard against it, saying the decision would be unfair. Now, the World Heritage Committee has voted to keep the reef off the list but they will reconsider it again next year.
MINJEE LEE
Aussie golf star Minjee Lee has won her first major championship! The 25-year-old from Perth took out the Evian Championship in France thanks to an amazing final round performance. She came into the round seven shots off the lead but thanks to some incredible play came back to win. It comes only weeks after her younger brother’s win in the Scottish Open. Guess it runs in the family!
OLYMPICS UPDATE
Here are some of Australia’s Top Olympic moments so far from bronze to gold! Let’s start with Swimmer Brendon Smith who won Australia’s first medal, a bronze in the men’s 400m individual medley. The women’s 100 metre freestyle relay team has done it again, claiming Australia’s first gold medal of the games and setting a world record time! And today, Ariarne Titmus won gold in the 400 metres freestyle. She caught her American rival Katie Ledecky in the final 100 metres to finish just outside world record time for Australia’s second gold medal.
CHINA SANDSTORM
In some places they say if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it’ll change. Well, I’m not sure that’s what this town in China’s northwest had in mind when a massive sandstorm swept through in a matter of minutes. The sky turned yellow, and this highway became virtually impossible to navigate.
NORWAY METEOR
It’s nighttime now. You’re in Norway. You look up at the sky when an unusually large meteor lights everything up for a few seconds! The Norwegian Meteor Network has been studying this footage to find out just where it might have fallen. What they’ll do if they find it, I’m not sure. What’s the going price for a meteor these days?
SOUTH AUSTRALIA HAIL
South Australia dealt with some frosty weather over the weekend! Including mini tornadoes and hailstorms and some made the most of it. Including this guy, Josh in the Adelaide Hills. He used the icy roads to take a quick ski around town.
