Japan – Anti-Olympics protesters gathered in Tokyo’s Harajuku district and marched to Sendagaya where the Olympic Games opening ceremony is taking place on Friday.
Demonstrators held signs accusing the Olympics of killing poor people, referring to the worsening COVID-19 situation within the country and demanding money to be spent on fighting the pandemic.
Before the march started, police arrived to control the demonstrators. Another protest took place this morning outside the Metropolitan Government Building during the torch relay.
The Games are scheduled to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021 after being postponed last year due to the pandemic.
This is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled. Shortly before the start of the games, on July 8, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared another state of emergency in Tokyo until August 22.
This decision means no spectators, not even local Japanese attendees, will be able to watch the games in person in the Japanese capital.
