Introducing fencer Koki Kano, the gold medalist at the last Tokyo Games. Koki Kano Kano won individual championships at the 2019 and 2020 World Cups, and won the gold medal in the men’s epee team fencing at the Tokyo Olympics. Although he is from Aichi Prefecture, he went on to Iwakuni Technical High School, a prestigious fencing school, and switched to “epee” under the guidance of coach Kunihiko Homma. He won the individual championship at the Inter-High School Championships and has continued to grow as a world-class player since then. Kano’s weapon is his “freshness,” which allows him to boldly jump in even against opponents with inferior reach. Currently ranked third in the world, he is aiming for a double crown at the Paris Olympics in both individual and team events. Kano commented, “I hope people will see me facing taller epee fencers from all over the world and winning.
