Less than a week after claiming the men’s all-around title, Japan’s HASHIMOTO Daiki was golden again. The 19-year-old soared to gold on the horizontal bar, closing out artistic gymnastics at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in style.
Hashimoto earned a 15.033 for gold, just ahead of Croatia’s Tin Srbic (14.900). ROC’s Nikita Nagornyy rounded out the podium in third after earning a 14.533.
With his victory today, Hashimoto has stamped himself as the heir apparent to UCHIMURA Kohei, who has indicated the Tokyo Games could be his last. Hashimoto is also the first Japanese since GUSHIKEN Koji (1984) to win two individual gold medals at the same Olympic Games.
It was an error-filled final as all but the top three and Team USA’s Brody Malone came off the bar. Malone, for his part, went the wrong way on a pirouetting element.
Srbic’s medal is the second won by a Croatian gymnast in Olympic history, while Nagornny’s bronze marks a third medal in Tokyo after helping lead ROC to team gold and claiming bronze in the men’s individual all-around final. _____________________________________________________
