Team USA’s Jade Carey rebounded from a scary vault final to win the gold the medal in the women’s floor exercise final inside Tokyo 2020’s Ariake Gymnastics Centre. Four-time Olympian Vanessa Ferrari of Italy won her first medal at the Games, taking silver. Japan’s MURAKAMI Mai and ROC’s Angelina Melnikova shared the bronze medal.
Carey posted a 14.366 for the win. Ferrari was the silver medallist at 14.200, with Murakami and Melnikova tied at 14.166.
“Coming back from a day like yesterday, I’m really proud of myself for being able to put that behind me and finish with probably the best floor routine I’ve ever done in my life,” said Carey.
Ferrari performed an emotional routine to ‘Con te partirò’, a song made famous by Andrea Bocelli. The 2006 world all-around champion tumbled a double-double to open and nailed the landing.
Murakami’s floor bronze is the first medal for her country in women’s gymnastics since they won team bronze in 1964. For Melnikova, it wraps up her Olympics with a third medal after leading ROC to gold nearly a week ago and claiming bronze in the women’s all-around final. _____________________________________________________
